Clint Eastwood is an Academy Award-winning film director, producer, actor and composer. Eastwood was born on May 31, 1930 in San Francisco, California. Prior to coming to Hollywood in the 1950s, Eastwood worked as a gas station attendant, firefighter, and a pianist at an Oakland bar. He then worked as an actor playing small roles in several Hollywood movies until he finally got lead roles, eventually rising to fame.
Eastwood became prominently known for his character as police inspector in the movie Dirty Harry, which, due to its popularity, birthed four sequels. Eastwood has appeared in sixty-five movies including Hang ‘Em High, Unforgiven, In the Line of Fire, and A Perfect World. He has directed a total of thirty films plus three more in pre-production stages. He has directed films including Play Misty For Me, True Crime, Mystic River, and Million Dollar Baby. He has also produced twenty-six films such as Firefox, Pale Rider, Space Cowboys, and True Crime. In addition, Eastwood has composed musical scores for some of his movies including Flags of Our Fathers, Million Dollar Baby, and Space Cowboys.
Clint Eastwood has been nominated eight times for the Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture, receiving five awards as Best Director and Best Picture for the films Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby. He was given the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 1995.
In his two recent films in 2006, Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima, Clint Eastwood utilizes two different viewpoints. He unfolds the plot of the Flags of Our Fathers from an American perspective of the Second World War while Letters from Iwo Jima is told through the Japanese point of view. Letters from Iwo Jima has been nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award and has also won Best Foreign Language Film in the Golden Globe.
