Interview: George W. Bush

Interviewee: George W. Bush

Date: 24 April 2007

Son of former President George HW Bush, George W. Bush is the forty-third president of the United States of America. He has served two terms of presidency since being sworn into office on 2001. He will step down in 2009.

Before being the nation’s commander-in-chief, George W. Bush was, for six years, the 46th Governor of the State of Texas. Upon winning reelection in November 1998, Bush was hailed as the first governor in Texas to serve two 4-year terms in a row.

A product of Yale and Harvard universities, George Bush had business interests in oil, gas and energy. And, in 1989, President Bush became a partner of the Texas Rangers baseball team. He is married to Laura Welch Bush, with whom he has two daughters Barbara and Jenna.

During his tenure, President Bush closely collaborated with the Congress to sign into law tax cut programs, as means for people to keep more of their hard-earned money. He also introduced sweeping education reforms such as the No Child Left Behind Act.

His first term coincided with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In response, President Bush took unpopular steps to wage the War On Terror, tracking down terrorists such as Osama bin Laden and other members of the al-Qaeda network. Vindicated by the attacks, President Bush set off military action against perceived “sponsors of terror,” like Saddam Hussein and the Taliban government in Iraq and Afghanistan, respectively.

The President sat down with Charlie Rose in reaction to the Democrats’ supplemental funding legislation in 2007, which coerces the country to withdraw its troops from Iraq as soon as possible. Here George Bush tries to justify the protracted presence of U.S. troops in Iraq.
