Interview: Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison

Interview: Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison
Interviewee: Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison
Interviewer: Charlie Rose

Date: 12 November 2007

Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison made history in 1993 when she was voted as the first female senator representing Texas. She was reelected to a second full term in 2000 with over four million votes, the largest ever received by any statewide candidate. She repeated the feat in 2006, when she was reelected yet again due to an overwhelming margin.

Apart from flooring the senate hopefuls of the state, Kay Bailey Hutchison has the distinction of being the first Republican to represent the state in the US senate since 1875. Her colleagues voted for her in 2006 to chair the Senate Republican Policy Committee in the 110th Congress. This gives her a place as the only woman among the four most powerful Republicans in the senate.

Kay Bailey Hutchison was a television reporter in Houston before she became enamored with politics. In 1971, she landed the post of press secretary for Republican National Committee co-chair Anne Armstrong, whom she interviewed. The year after, Hutchison was brought to power in the Texas House of Representatives. From 1990 to 1993, Hutchison served as Texas state treasurer.

Charlie Rose interviews the prominent senator in time for the release of her third book, Leading Ladies: American Trailblazers. Here the senator reveals her plans to run as governor of the state in the 2010 elections. She also shares her views on the war in Iraq, state of education, and the Republican nominees for the 2008 U.S. presidential race.
