About Steve Schwarzman:
Steve Schwarzman is the Chairman, CEO and Co-Founder of Blackstone and the Chairman of the board of directors of its general partner, Blackstone Group Management L.L.C. Steve Schwarzman created the Blackstone Group with his business partner Peter Peterson in ‘85. His career in finances began during the ‘70s at Lehman Brothers’ investment bank, during his early 30s. While he was with Lehman Brothers, Steve Schwarzman was elected to be the Managing Director. He focused on the firm’s mergers and acquisitions business from ’77 to ’84. From ’83 – ’84, he was the Chairman of the firm’s Mergers & Acquisitions Committee.
In 1985, Stephen Schwarzman and his partner Peter Peterson started the Blackstone Group, a private equity group that concentrated on acquisitions and mergers. Under Stephen Schwarzman’s leadership, the Blackstone Group has become a leader in the private equity industry, facilitating leveraged buyouts, mergers, and other real estate transactions worth billions of dollars. On March 22, 2007, the Blackstone Group was become publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
Stephen Schwarzman is a very active philanthropist. Under the auspices of the Blackstone Foundation, Stephen Schwarzman has contributed to or raised money for numerous institutions, including the Frick Collection, the Whitney Museum, Phoenix House, the Red Cross, the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, the American Museum of Natural History, New York City Outward Bound, the Asia Society, and the Central Park Conservancy. He is also on the board the New York Public Library, the Frick and the New York City Ballet. He recently contributed $100 million toward the New York Public Library’s expansion). Stephen Schwarzman has also raised money for the Catholic Archdiocese of New York and the American Jewish Committee.
Steven Schwarzman also spends time in front of a classroom as adjunct professor at the Yale School of Management. As a Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, he occasionally shares his box seats with the U.S. President.
Most recently in ‘07, Stephen Schwarzman was named by Time Magazine to be part of the “100 Most Influential People in The World.”
