Alex Rodriguez and Katie Couric
Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez was born on July 27, 1975 in New York. This Dominican American baseball player, also known as A-Rod, presently plays as the third baseman for the New York Yankees.
In 1994, Rodriguez was chosen by the Seattle Mariners to be the first overall in the baseball draft. 1996 season was his breakout season having batted .358 including 123 runs batted in and 36 home runs. In 1998, he was chosen as Players Choice AL Player of the Year. In 2000, he signed with the Texas Rangers with a $252 million contract, and in 2004 he was traded to the New York Yankees with the largest deal in baseball history of over $300 million. In 2007, A-Rod was the first player in major league history to have at least 35 home runs and 100 RBI in 10 successive seasons, beating Jimmie Fox who had them in just nine consecutive seasons. Rodriguez is a three time AL MVP, having won them in 2003, 2005, and 2007.
Alex Rodriguez reacts to the allegations of the Mitchell report, released just before the interview, about the use of steroids among several baseball players. Rodriguez claims that he has never used steroids, or any performance-enhancing drugs for that matter. Rodriguez also answers the question about any knowledge of his teammates using such prohibited substances. He also speaks about his performance post season and about the announcement of him opting out of his Yankees contract to become a free agent. The announcement was made during the World Series in 2007 which raised criticisms for upstaging the monumental event. A-Rod also talks about his current relationship with his agent Scott Boras and about his new $300 million contract with the Yankees.
