Actress Kyra Sedgwick talks about her role as a deputy police chief in the TNT cable drama series, “The Closer,” which earned her an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe award.
She was born Kyra Minturn Sedgwick on August 19, 1965 in New York, New York. Sedgwick attended Sarah Lawrence College and Friends Seminary and eventually got a degree in theater when she graduated from the University of South Carolina. She made her professional acting debut at the age of sixteen on the television soap opera, Another World. In 1985, she starred in the movie War and Love. However, she first gained recognition for her performance in the movie Born on the Fourth of July (1989), as the girlfriend of actor Tom Cruise. Kyra Sedgwick had her big break when she got the role of Linda Powell in the 1992 movie Singles. She also appeared in several Hollywood movies during the 1990s including Mr. and Mrs. Bridge; Heart and Souls; Something to Talk About; Murder in the First; Phenomenon; and Montana. Additionally, she appeared in made-for-TV films, including Lemon Sky (1988) where she met her husband, Kevin Bacon — and Miss Rose White (1992). Her films in 2000 onwards include What’s Cooking?; Labor Pains; Personal Velocity: Three Portraits; Secondhand Lions; Just a Kiss; Something the Lord Made; Cavedweller; The Woodsman; Loverboy; and The Game Plan.
In 2005, Kyra Sedgwick started her first run in The Closer, receiving approximately $300,000 per episode. In 2006, she won the Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series. Also because of her performance in The Closer, she received other awards including the Satellite Award for Best Actress in 2005 and 2006, and the Gracie Allen Award for Best Actress in 2006.
Kyra Sedgwick married actor Kevin Bacon in 1988. The couple has two sons.
