CNN is aired globally through CNN International; the latter enables the network to work with its news bureaus worldwide. As of December 2007, CNN manages 39 news bureaus and editorial operations; 10 of them are situated in the United States and 29 are positioned around the rest of the world. Its global team consists of nearly 4,000 news professionals who bring the top news stories from across the globe, making them available to over 1.5 billion people in more than 212 countries and territories.

History

In June 1980, the Cable News Network was launched by the Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., which at that time was owned by Robert Edward “Ted” Turner, before Time Warner acquired the company in 1996. After an introduction given by Ted Turner, couple David Walker and Lois Hart anchored its first newscast. In 1982, Headline News, a companion network, was launched. Formerly called CNN2, Headline News provided a 24-hour cycle of 30-minute news broadcasts.

During the first Persian Gulf War in 1991, CNN made its mark in history, gaining utmost respect and legitimacy, as it was the only news channel that was able to communicate outside Iraq, when the American bombing campaign started, with live reports coming from a hotel in Baghdad. Because of the Gulf War coverage, several reporters such as Bernard Shaw, Peter Arnett, and John Holliman gained popularity in American households.

In the 1990s, new ventures were introduced: CNN International, which features news, business, and current affairs programming worldwide through cable and via satellite; CNN Airport Network, a satellite TV network that broadcasts news to airports throughout North America and several airports around the globe; CNN en Español; CNN en Español Radio; CNN Newsource, a video relay service that features CNN content to television stations affiliated with CNN; CNN Turk; and CNN+. CNN also launched its news website CNN.com which has emerged as one of the most popular news websites in the world.

Another notable achievement of CNN was that it was the first network to broadcast the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

In 2005, Headline News split from its original format with the addition of Headline Prime, which currently features shows such as Prime News with Erica Hill; Showbiz Tonight; Nancy Grace; and Glenn Beck. In 2006, CNN launched CNN Exchange and CNN iReport, which broadcasts reports filed by amateur reporters. In 2007, CNN launched CNN HD, which features high-definition versions of select programming; it broadcasts shows like Lou Dobbs Tonight, American Morning, Your Money, and Anderson Cooper 360. Currently, CNN keeps a free live broadcast. They also offer RSS feeds and podcasts.
