Interview: Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman was actually born in Honolulu, Hawaii though she grew up in Sydney, Australia, her parents’ hometown. Her father is a biochemist, clinical psychologist, and author; while Nicole’s mother is a nursing instructor. As a child, Nicole and her sister, Antonia, discussed current events with their parents while on the dinner table.
The award winning actress began her career at 15 years old when she appeared on a music video for Pat Wilson’s “Bop Girl.” After that first outing, Nicole had several supporting roles in a number of television series and films.
In 2002, Nicole Kidman was interviewed by acclaimed television interviewer and journalist, Charlie Rose in his show with the same name. Rose’s show, produced by WNET and distributed by PBS, features some of the most interesting personalities in America and from all over the world. Rose’s interview with Nicole came right before the screening of the movie, The Hours, for which the actress won several acting awards. It also came after her separation with first husband, Tom Cruise.
During the interview, Rose praised Nicole Kidman for her performances in some of her best movies, particularly Cold Mountain. Nicole revealed that working with deeply passionate directors helped her a lot. She also said that she loved going around the world and working with people who have visions. Nicole Kidman was also honest in saying that she hadn’t read The Hours even when she was already approached for her role in the movie. She, however, believed that doing the film made her truly understand Virginia Woolf, the character she portrayed in The Hours.
In most of Nicole’s film, her intensity, passion, and intelligence, as well as her love for the role is evident. This was first confirmed by her performance in the movie Dead Calm where she starred in alongside Sam Neill and Billy Zane. Critics gave her performance strong reviews. This eventually led to more movies and more interesting roles like the ones she had in Days of Thunder (where she met Tom), Far & Away (also with Tom Cruise), Batman Forever, Eyes Wide Shut (her third with Tom), and Practical Magic. However, it was her performance in the satirical comedy, To Die For, which established her name in the industry. The movie and her performance were praised by critics and earned for her a Golden Globe nomination.
Nicole’s next movies exhibit her depth and intelligence as an actress and person. Moulin Rouge saw her sing and dance with Ewan McGregor; The Others was intriguing; and Cold Mountain was a different kind of love story. Her role in The Hours made her the first Australian actress to ever receive an Academy Award. More challenging and profound roles followed her Oscar win.
