Interview: Amy Lee

Amy Lynn Lee-Hartzler, born on December 13th 1981, is known throughout the world as Amy Lee, the American singer, songwriter and pianist who cofounded the rock band Evanescence. She is also the lead vocalist of the group.

Amy Lee was born to parents Sara Cargill and John Lee, a television personality and DJ. She has two sisters, Lori and Carrie, and a brother named Robby. Her younger sister died at three due to an unidentified ailment. There were reports of the songs “Hello” from Evanescence’s Fallen album and “Like You” from The Open Door being a dedication to her late sister.

Moving from one place to another, Amy Lee and her family finally settled permanently in Little Rock, Arkansas, where her band initially began. For a brief time, she studied music theory and composition at Middle Tennessee State University, eventually dropping out to focus on her music career.

Earlier in her songwriting career, she recalled writing the songs “A Single Tear” and “Eternity of the Remorse.” The latter was said to have been written when she was 11 years young, while the former was for an assignment in eighth grade.

On January 9th 2007, Amy Lee announced at a Live @ Much live broadcast episode that she got engaged the night before. She later confirmed that she was marrying long-time friend and therapist Josh Hartzler. She even mentioned that there were two songs inspired by him; “Bring Me to Life” (Fallen) and “Good Enough.” That same year, on EvThreads, an online message board for updates and topics about Evanescence, she announced that she was “now officially Mrs. Amy Hartzler.”
